The bowl gathers the aromas released by the beer, while the volume above the measure leaves room for a head of the right height. In stemmed glasses the stem keeps the beer away from the warmth of the hand and holds its temperature better.

The base of the glass can be given a specific treatment. A nucleation point laser-etched on the inside of the base roughens the glass and produces a constant stream of bubbles, which rise and feed the head for as long as the beer lasts. Decover Srl, the Group company specialising in decoration, creates it with a CO2 laser engraving and calls it Punto Perlage.

Transparency matters too. A clear glass shows the colour and clarity of the beer and the head as it forms. In professional service strength and stability also count, because a beer glass moves constantly between the bar, the table and the dishwasher.

Beer Glass Styles by Type of Beer

Many beer glass shapes are tied by tradition to particular styles, and each one answers a need in service, room for the head or concentration of the aromas. The beer list of your venue is the starting point for finding the right glass for each style.

Mug, from half a litre to one litre. Lagers and pale beers served in large measures, in the German tradition. The column widens at the centre and narrows towards the mouth to protect the rim. These are the Lubeck 0.5, which after pouring lets you remove the excess foam with the skimmer, and the Monaco 0.5.

Tulip or draught stemmed glass. Lagers and ales. The stem protects the temperature, the bowl gathers the aromas, and the tulip shape, of Belgian tradition, brings both advantages together. In the catalogue the Volterra 0.4 has the classic tulip shape, while the Julius 0.3 is the stemmed glass indicated for draught beer in beer halls, pizzerias, restaurants and bars.

Tasting glass, 40 cl. Craft beers. The bulge at the base of the bowl acts as a 100 ml fill line and lets the head last longer, so it can be observed more easily. These are the Bier sommelier 400 and the Sommelier ale 400, designed for darker craft beers such as porter and stout.

The glass with an inward-curving rim sits in the middle of this scale and is a shape designed not to specialise. In the catalogue this is the Koblenz 0.4, which the product sheet indicates for any type of beer, from lager to stout, and whose rim, slightly rounded inwards, keeps the head more compact and longer lasting.

Sizes and Capacities for Service

Every product sheet gives two capacities. The first is the serving measure, the one stated on the menu. The second is the brim-full capacity, the volume up to the rim, and the difference between the two is the space for the head.

On the glass, measures are identified by two marks. The fill line shows the capacity when beer is served. The MID marking, required by the European Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU, is a certification instead, and guarantees the capacity of the glass.

On pressed-glass mugs and beer glasses, such as the Don and the Brema, the MID marking sits underneath the base and usually comes with the fill line. Blown models and pint formats, such as the half pint and the pint, usually carry neither, although on blown glasses both can be added at the decoration stage.

Choosing glasses within a single range gives the beer list a coherent look, because different sizes share the same design and restocking comes from one line. Brema, Koblenz, Lubeck, Monaco and Volterra run from 0.2 to 0.5 litres, Icon follows the pint scale and the Don mug goes up to one litre.

Mechanical and Impact Resistance

A beer glass faces knocks at the bar, toasts and closely spaced wash cycles, and how long it lasts depends largely on how it is made. Vetreria di Borgonovo produces its beer glasses with two technologies. Pressed glass takes shape in the mould and gives sharp, defined details, such as the dimples of the Don, while blown glass gives a lighter glass.

The difference shows in the weights. A pressed half-litre mug such as the Don weighs 770 grams, a blown glass of similar capacity such as the Lubeck 355. In high-turnover venues the thickness of pressed glass is an advantage, because the mug stands up to knocks and toasts without fear of breakage.

Blown glasses protect their most exposed points too. On the Pantheon the rim is folded inwards against chipping and the base is strong and heavy, while on the Koblenz the slightly inward-rounded rim protects the glass.

The glass is extra-clear and lead-free, produced entirely at the Borgonovo Val Tidone plant.

Dishwashing and Lifespan

Every product sheet states dishwasher compatibility together with weight and dimensions. To preserve clarity over time, the handling guide recommends cycles up to 65 °C and non-abrasive detergents, with the glasses spaced apart in the rack.

With beer, how clean a glass is shows in the head. Residues of grease, detergent or sanitiser, even invisible ones, make it collapse, and bubbles clinging to the sides below the surface of the beer are the sign of a glass that is not beer-clean. A rinse with cool water just before pouring removes the residues.

Glass breaks from sudden changes in temperature rather than from heat or cold as such, and the guide sets the maximum thermal differential at 42 °C, up or down. A glass that comes out of the dishwasher hot should therefore be left to cool before use, and a cold glass brought to room temperature before washing.

Daily care includes regular checks of rim and foot, with chipped pieces taken out of service. To avoid damage, glass, ceramics and metal are best kept apart, both in storage and in the dishwasher, and only models designed for it should be stacked.

Building the Glassware for Bars and Restaurants

How many shapes to keep behind the bar depends on the beer list, while how many pieces to hold depends on covers and on the pace of service.

In a pizzeria or a restaurant with one or two beers on draught, a few shapes are often enough, a draught stemmed glass or a versatile glass, alongside a mug or a pint for the larger measures. It is a compact set that takes little space and is easy to manage.

In a beer bar with many taps and different styles the range widens. Alongside the mugs for lagers served in large measures come the weizen glass for wheat beers, the biconical column for Pils, the tulip glass for ales and the tasting glass for craft beers. How many shapes to keep is a decision that comes from the list and from the way beer is served.

Many models in the range can also be customised online with a one-colour screen print. In the product configurator you upload your logo, choose the Pantone shade and see the preview on the glass straight away. For more elaborate decorations Decover Srl produces screen prints in up to 8 colours, and the full process, from creative brief to production, is described in the guide to the custom glass tumbler. If your venue also serves wine, the guide to wine glasses for restaurants follows the same selection method.

Browse Beer Glasses for Bars and Restaurants

The Beer category of the catalogue holds the full range of mugs, glasses and stemmed glasses, with the dimensions and weights of each model, or you can download the Catalogue!

Choosing beer glasses for bars and restaurants means weighing three requirements together: the shape has to bring out the head and the aromas of the styles on the list, the capacity has to leave room for the head above the measure served, and the glass has to keep up with the pace of the bar […]

[77

post-369028","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-en
["GET
